Alaska Board of Barbering & Alaska Barber License

Alaska State FlagUpdated May 31, 2012

Currently, all barber licensing in Alaska falls under the Alaska Board of Barbers and Hairdressers.

Alaska Barber License Requirements

1650 training hours at barber school
Apprenticeship is not currently permitted for a barber license.

Alaska Barber License Renewal

Alaska barber licensees must renew their licenses every odd-numbered year in the month of August. Barber licenses cost $160 to renew. Alaska does not require licensees to complete continuing education hours to renew your license, though CEUs are always recommended to stay current in the industry.

Alaska Barber License Reciprocity or Transfer

The Alaska Board of Barbers and Hairdressers can help with barber license transfers. Applicants for transfer must have a current, active license from the state from which they’re moving. Training requirements to get that license must be equivalent to Alaska’s, or the board may accept full-time work experience in lieu of those training hours. Applicants must have passed the practical and written exam in the state from which they’re moving. The board will review all barber license transfer and reciprocity applications on a case-by-case basis.
