Currently all barber licensing in Minnesota falls under the Minnesota Board of Barber Examiners in Minneapolis.

Minnesota Barber License Requirements

  • Master Barber License – 1500 Hours
  • Barber Instructor – Barber License + 3 Years Work Experience + Instructor Training

If you fail the board exam (score less than 70%) you are required to re-take the entire exam, written, oral and practical. You may retest after you complete of an additional 500 hours of schooling.

Minnesota Barber License Renewal

All Minnesota barber licenses expire December 31 annually. All barbershop certificates expire on June 30 annually.

Minnesota Barber License Reciprocity or Transfer

Out-of-state applicants who wish to transfer their barber licenses to Minnesota must have finished barber training that is substantially equivalent to or greater than Minnesota’s requirements, and the current license must be in good standing. If you do not meet these requirements, you may be required to take additional barber training hours or re-take the licensing exams. You must complete a reciprocity application, provide a copy of your current out-of-state license, and get a letter of verification from the state board of your home state.
