Currently all barber licensing in Maine falls under the Maine Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation – Barbering & Cosmetology Program in Augusta.

Maine Barber License Requirements

  • Barber – 1500 Hours OR 2500 Hours Apprenticeship
  • Limited Barber – 800 Hours oR 1600 Hours Apprenticeship
  • Barber Instructor – Barber License + 1000 Hours Barber Instructor Education + 12 Education Credits from Post-Secondary School

Maine Barber License Renewal

All of Maine’s barber licenses renew annually on October 31 for a $20 fee. Barber schools must renew annually on their specific license expiration date and the cost is $500.

Maine Barber License Reciprocity or Transfer

Maine offers barber licensure by endorsement. The applicant must be currently licensed as a barber in his or her home state. Applicants for endorsement must be at least 17 years of age, show proof of having completed at least 10th grade, verification of your licensure in your home state, proof of your completed barber education hours completed, proof of passing the state-level written and practical exams, and your current license number and status. To seek licensure in Maine by endorsement, the requirements depend on the license:

For a full barber license, endorsement applicants must meet one of the following criteria: satisfactorily completed 1,500 hours of barbering or cosmetology instruction in a licensed school in not less than 9 months; OR satisfactorily completed a course of study in barbering or cosmetology in a licensed school plus show proof of work experience as a barber or cosmetologist totaling at least 2,500 hours; OR satisfactorily completed a 2,500-hours of barbering or cosmetology trainee/apprenticeship progra.

For a limited barber license, endorsement applications must meet one of the following criteria: satisfactorily completed 800 hours of limited barbering instruction in a licensed school in not less than 5 months; OR satisfactorily completed a course of study in limited barbering in a licensed school plus show proof of work experience as a barber totaling at least 1600 hours; OR satisfactorily completed 1,600-hours of limited barbering trainee/apprenticeship program.
