Currently all barber licensing in Maryland falls under the Maryland Board of Barbers in Baltimore.

Maryland Barber License Requirements 

  • Barber – 1200 Hours OR 2250 Hours Apprenticeship + Pass Barber Exam
  • Master Barber – Barber License + 15 Months Work Experience + Pass Master Barber Exam

Maryland Barber License Renewal

Maryland barber licenses must be renewed every two years on the individual licensee’s expiration date.  The Board automatically mails renewal information and Internet instructions to licensees approximately 60 days prior to the expiration date of the current license. Barber license renewal in MD costs $50.

Maryland Barber License Reciprocity or Transfer

Maryland offers barber licensure by endorsement. An individual who possesses a current license in another state must provide certification that their license was obtained under equivalent or greater requirements than Maryland’s, show that their license is current and in good standing, and have two years of notarized work experience.
