New Jersey State Flag

Currently all barber licensing in New Jersey falls under the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling in Newark.

New Jersey Barber License Requirements

Currently there is no separate “barber license” in New Jersey. Instead, this falls under the Cosmetologist & Hairstylist license. The cosmetology and barber boards merged in 1984, so the Cosmetology & Hairstyling curriculum now features shaving.

  • Cosmetologist & Hairstylist License – 1200 Hours
  • Cosmetology & Hairstyling Instructor License – Cosmetologist-Hairstylist License + 500 Hours + 30-Hour Teaching Methods Course

You must be at least 17 years of age and have either a high school diploma or GED to get a cosmetologist & hairstylist license in NJ.

New Jersey Barber License Renewal

Cosmetology & Hairstyling license renewal in New Jersey happens every two years in even-numbered years. The cost to renew a practitioner’s license is $60.

New Jersey Barber License Reciprocity or Transfer

New Jersey offers licensure by endorsement to cosmetologist-hairstylist applicants if he or she satisfies the NJ requirements for licensure as a cosmetologist-hairstylist, and presently hold a current, active license in good standing as a barber or beautician in another state. You must submit an “out-of-state” application and required documentation and pass the New Jersey Board’s examination. The application must be requested in writing and will be mailed to you.
