Currently all barber licensing in Illinois falls under the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation in Springfield.

Illinois Barber License Requirements

  • Barber – 1500 Hours
  • Barber Instructor – Barber License + 1000 Hours

Illinois Barber License Renewal

Illinois barber, barber instructor and barber school licenses must be renewed every 2 years by July 31 of odd-numbered years during the month preceding its expiration date. At this time there are no continuing education hours required to renew a barber license in Illinois, however cosmetologists are required to get 14 hours of CEUs during each licensure period, and it is always recommended that licensees take continuing education to stay current int he industry.

Illinois Barber License Reciprocity or Transfer

Illinois offers barber licensure by endorsement. The applicant must be currently licensed as a barber in his or her home state. To seek licensure in Illinois by endorsement, you must file an application, provide certification of your licensure from your home state, documentation of the hours and exams completed in your home state, transcripts from the barber school you attended,verification of employment forms to show at least 3 years of lawful practice in your home state, and the appropriate fees.
