Currently all barber licensing in Michigan falls under the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs – Barber Examiners in Boston.

Michigan Barber License Requirements

  • Barber License – 2000 Hours
  • Barber Instructor – Barber License + 2 Years Work Experience + 1 Year Instructor Training OR 60 semester hours OR 90 term hours of teaching education

Applicants for Michigan barber licenses must be at least 17 years of age, complete 10th grade education or higher, demonstrate completion of training hour requirements and pass the written and practical board exams.

Michigan Barber License Renewal

All Michigan barber licenses are renewed every two years by September 30. The fees to renew each license are as follows:

  • Student Barbers, Student Barber Instructors -$30
  • Barbers – $60
  • Barber Instructors, Barbershops – $80
  • Barber Colleges – $300

Michigan Barber License Reciprocity or Transfer

Applicants who hold a barber license in another state, jurisdiction or country for 1 out of 3 years immediately preceding the date of application may become licensed as a barber if the requirements for licensure in the other state, jurisdiction or country are substantially equivalent to the requirements in Michigan. However, a license may be denied or limited if the applicant has been disciplined or disciplinary action is pending in another state, jurisdiction or country.
