Tennessee Barber License Requirements

Barber candidate must be at least 17 years of age and have the equivalent of a tenth-grade education. Barber school experience of 1,500 hours is required for eligibility. Up to 750 hours may be transferred from a cosmetology school if candidate has a valid cosmetology license. The master barber exam fee for the state of Tennessee is $140.

Tennessee Barber License Renewal

Renewal of a Tennessee barber license is required every two years and costs $80 as long as you renew on time. The cost of late renewals is dependent upon how long your license has been expired. License expiration of greater than three years requires that you apply for reinstatement. The reinstatement exam costs $70.

Tennessee Barber License Reciprocity or Transfer

A barber license reciprocity application for the state of Tennessee requires proof of licensure furnished by the State Board of the state in which you are currently licensed. A $150 fee is required after the board establishes that your training was comparable in length to the state’s requirements for new master barbers. Five years of work experience as a barber evidenced by notarized statements may be substituted for barbering school training hours. If you lack this experience, you will be required to take the Tennessee practical examination.
